Ben (Viggo Mortensen) and Leslie (Trin Miller) raise their children on a land they bought in the Pacific Northwest, outside the usual patterns of civilization, different from conventional forms of education and far from social norms. However, with Leslie's death, this heavenly order is disrupted. While Ben tries to prevent his children, whom he is forced to take to the city, from getting lost in this new way of life, he also tries to prepare them for a life without their mother. With the pressure from Leslie's family and the fact that he begins to believe that his children are behind his back, Ben faces a brand new test of fatherhood and begins to question his own methods.
