Brendan Fraser’ın canlandırdığı Charlie, dünya edebiyatının en önemli klasiklerinden Moby Dick’teki “beyaz balina”yı saplantı derecesinde seven ve ciddi obezite sorunları olan bir öğretmendir. Yıllar evvel eşinden ayrılarak terk ettiği kızı Ellie’yle (Sadie Sink) arasını düzeltme çabasındadır. Fakat kızına kendini affettirmeye çalışırken işlerin daha da kontrolden çıkmasına yol açar. Filmin dünya prömiyerini yaptığı Venedik ve Toronto’da dakikalarca ayakta alkışlanan görkemli performansıyla Brendan Fraser, En İyi Erkek Oyuncu Oscar ödülünü kazandı.
