The film revolves around a group of tiny people called Borrowers, who are only 10 cm tall and live under the floors of normal-sized ordinary human homes. The events begin when 12-year-old Sho comes to his mother's house where he spent his childhood. As Sho gets out of the car, he notices a cat trying to attack something in the bushes. Shortly after, the cat escapes after being attacked by a crow. Curious, Sho goes into the bush to see what the cat is up to and sees Arrietty, a 14-year-old Borrower. That same night, Arrietty's father, Pod, takes his daughter up on the floor to teach her how to get candy. Meanwhile, Arrietty notices that Sho is awake and drops the sugar cube in her hand. Although Sho says there is no need to be afraid, Pod decides that they should move anyway.
