Güzel Sanatlar Tiyatro Oyunculuk mezunu olan sanatçının, 1978'de Devlet Tiyatroları Genel Müdürlüğü'nde başladığı sanat hayatı, tiyatronun yanı sıra, sinema ve dizi filmlerle de devam etmektedir.
Çocuk tiyatrosu üzerine yoğunlaşan Sonkan, yurt dışında sergilenen oyunlarda da rol aldı. Tiyatro alanında birçok oyunda ödül kazanmıştır.
