Emel Mathlouthi is a Tunisian-American singer-songwriter, composer, performer and producer whose music connects time, countries and continents.
She fled Tunis in 2008 after her music was banned in Tunisia and she was prevented from performing in the country. In Paris, where she found creative freedom, she devoted herself to writing and refining her protest songs, which were mainly arranged with vocals, guitar, North African percussion and cello. She later added electronic elements, which formed the basis of her first studio album Kelmti Horra (My Words Are Free).
Emel continued her musical development with her 2017 album Ensen (Human) and in 2019 created Everywhere We Looked Was Burning, a work that reflects her preference for the English language as well as experimental and cinematic music.
In 2020, Emel spent the quarantine period in Tunis. After several months of isolation, she gathered recordings to compose the acoustic album The Tunis Diaries, which marks a moving reconciliation with her homeland and early influences. An accompanying song from the album, Holm (A Dream), was released with a simple video and became her most listened to song with over seven million views on YouTube in 15 months.
In 2021, after the COVID-19 pandemic, Emel released a live album of her self-titled album Everywhere We Looked Was Burning. In 2022, she celebrated the 10-year
